Get this. You’ve gone down the road for the local Chinese grub.
You look at the menu, and oh fantastic news they’ve got the little 🌱 (vegan) legend at the bottom of the page.
Things are looking up. No need to awkwardly check with the under-informed waitress who started yesterday about what you can eat.
But then. You get to the sides section. And you see it.
Steamed Jasmine Rice
Did you notice that? Something subtle happened here. No 🌱 in sight.
Now you might be thinking. Itsi, you simpleton, it’s steamed white rice. You know that doesn’t have animal products.
Well, you imbecile, that’s the point. This menu has now showed an absolute lack of credibility. What am I meant to think of the scallion pancake? The egg roll? The fried noodles? And what’s more, I don’t think their 🌱 counts for shit. You think I now think that anyone has thought about this menu even a second? The point of the label is not to ask, and now you’re making me ask.
And you know what, there’s like 1 restaurant in 100 that will add butter to their rice or something, and then it’s fucked for everyone, I’ve lost trust in the whole system, so I got to know you’re on my side if you’ve got regular steamed rice.
Just label everything. It’s not hard.
Think of the roti at the Indian restaurant, the samosas. These fellas are on the fence as to their ghee and butter content.
Think of the sauces on the side, your little gremolata or pickle plates or that kinda bullshit.
Think of the fries! No one knows what you’ve done with your fries. These need labels. Stop leaving them out!
New point.
Can we all agree of (V) or (VE) which is going to be vegan and which is going to be vegetarian? They don’t have a legend at the bottom of most of them and it pisses me off.
Two solutions
Let’s just agree that (V) will be vegetarian and (VE) will be vegan everywhere.
or; All these vegetarians should just stop being cowards and become vegan so we don’t have this problem
Oh, and don’t get me started about “plant-based”! What is that supposed to mean? That should be expunged from menus.
